Edtech psychosis is everywhere lately. You have Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, partnering with AI companies one month and then denouncing AI a year later. You have New York City Public Schools banning then unbanning and rebanning AI in their schools over a span of three years. You have the Los Angeles Unified School District promoting their custom AI chatbot one year and then banning AI two years later. You have edtech insiders all over LinkedIn excited about technologies way out of proportion to any evidence that they support student learning.
Edtech psychosis flourishes wherever a giant tech company’s free cash flow meets education’s threadbare operating budgets. Edtech psychosis flourishes in people who are more impressed by a novel business model or a speculative technology than by good teaching or a well-designed curriculum. Edtech psychosis flourishes in people whose pedagogical convictions are too weak to withstand a wink from whatever new technology walks by.
If your job is to support students, teachers, or schools, then edtech psychosis is fatal for your project and you should hope for an inoculation. Edtech psychosis will stunt your understanding of the reality of schooling. You’ll imagine students as little empty hard drives or young disobedient employees. You’ll imagine teachers as frantic CPUs, desperately trying to write different bits of information onto every student. You’ll imagine most kids learn as you did—well-supported and self-motivated. You’ll imagine all kids are as eager as you are to work and learn by themselves on a laptop, as eager as you are to learn what a large language model might say next.
How do you inoculate yourself against edtech psychosis?
There are people who succumb to edtech psychosis and people who seem immune to its debilitating power. Immunocompetent people understand the “grammar of schooling”—the goals, constraints, routines, and aspirations that power the people who work in schools. The immunocompetent are teaching classes, observing classes, watching videos of classes, or, at minimum, reading testimonials from teachers all as often as they can. The immunocompromised do none of those things. Instead, they congregate on LinkedIn like kids at a chickenpox party, each one wondering in their own perplexed way why people aren’t as impressed by artificial intelligence as they are.
How I’m inoculating myself against edtech psychosis this year.
As of last week, I have successfully begged my way into a fifth grade public school classroom here in Oakland, CA, where I’ll work weekly this school year. I was trained as a high school math teacher and have since taught middle school but, until now, I have only experienced elementary school as a parent. This will be an adventure. Next week I’ll share some early observations.

Odds & Ends
¶ Los Angeles USD and New York City PS both enacted sweeping bans on artificial intelligence in the last couple of weeks. Over on LinkedIn, edtech operators are either trying to put on a brave face or they are fully rending their garments. My commentary here is brief: with artificial intelligence, you spent four years promising baby while delivering bathwater and too many people noticed. Next time: consider underpromising, overdelivering, or both.
¶ Linda Jacobson at The 74 describes the ways AI in education has underdelivered in her round-up of recent research. Wise words in the article from high school history teacher Wendy Graham: “Kids don’t do their best for robots; kids do their best for people.”
¶ I appreciated this Justin Reich column which notes that the absolute best case hypothetical educational website lives inside a browser which lives inside an operating system which lives inside a device. The best case hypothetical educational website controls none of those outer layers and each one of them has goals for users that often run counter to the goals of that absolute best case hypothetical educational website.
¶ New York Times reporter Natasha Singer has a quote from Brad Smith, Microsoft’s president, that we should inspect closely.
Brad Smith, Microsoft’s vice chair and president, told me the dynamic began because public schools often seemed ill-equipped to teach crucial modern subjects and prepare students for the ever-evolving demands of the job market. He also suggested I consider where schools might be without support from corporations like Microsoft.
“Philanthropy in the private sector is doing this work because the public sector has failed to do what it’s supposed to do,” Mr. Smith said. He allowed that the situation wasn’t ideal. “It’s filled the gap out of necessity,” he said. “It’s not the way we should want public education to work.”
Of course public education doesn’t operate the way you want it to, Brad. Private industry has always wanted the public to subsidize its employee development costs. The public simply doesn’t share either your opinion about the point of school or your fiduciary duty to Microsoft shareholders.
¶ My local district here in Oakland, CA, is contemplating screen time restrictions. School board member Rachel Latta came on board when she walked into a classroom and noticed the effect of technology on the class.
[Latta] said she has sometimes visited schools and seen entire classes of students not speaking to each other, but working independently on laptops with headphones on, which struck her as odd.
Yes, it’s odd! It’s very odd. We build and operate these expensive buildings called “schools.” We fill them with caring adults and we beg kids to come and then when kids arrive we say, “Whoa whoa whoa, let’s not have too much together time now! Here are your laptops and headphones.” People seem to have substantially less patience nowadays for technology that tears down rather than builds up a community.
